Meritous uses straightforward controls, but each battle demands careful decisions about when to spend power and when to wait for recovery. The world is generated fractally, producing thousands of rooms to investigate rather than a fixed route. Compass tiles use a dark arrow to point toward optional artifacts and a light arrow to indicate the next quest location; the quest marker appears only after enough enemies have been defeated. The three PSI keys—the sword, lance, and bow—can be collected in any order, but their associated bosses are always fought in the same sequence.

Meritous is open-source under the GPL, and its platform-independent code uses SDL for graphics, audio, and keyboard input, with SDL_image handling PNG files and SDL_mixer handling music and sound effects. The Android release is version 0.0.4, requires Android 4.1 or newer, and supports arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86_64, and x86 devices. Recorded source updates include faster automap scrolling while holding Space, a fix for boss dialogue not appearing, and a correction for a problem seen in some Linux environments.
