Check whether a hackerspace or makerspace is open and view its details from an Android phone with MyHackerspace (New). The app uses the SpaceAPI directory to gather registered spaces, lets you choose one by name, and retrieves its associated data from that space’s SpaceAPI endpoint. Each space can display its location, contact details, opening status, and sensor readings.

A home-screen status widget shows whether the selected space is open or closed, and multiple widgets can be used for different spaces. Widget imagery comes from the endpoint’s JSON: an open.icon entry can supply separate open and closed images, while a logo entry can show the space’s logo. This makes the app useful for members checking access status, visitors planning a visit, and anyone following several community workshops from one device.

MyHackerspace (New) is an open-source Android app for Android 8.0 or later, built for Universal architecture. Version 2.3.1 adds the ability to choose the app language through Android’s app settings.

The SpaceAPI community also supports the project through the #spaceapi:matrix.coredump.ch Matrix chat. A space’s status and sensor data depend on the information exposed by its SpaceAPI endpoint, while widget appearance can be customized through that endpoint’s JSON fields.
