Open-Typer gives learners structured touch-typing practice and automatically validates their performance as they complete each exercise. It addresses the difficulty of tracking mistakes during keyboard training by checking entries as they are typed. Practice can be adjusted with an exercise time limit, passages generated from previously mistyped words, and reverse-text exercises. Learners can personalize the background, paper, top panel, and text colors, while a dark theme changes the visual style for low-light practice. Students, independent learners, and anyone refreshing their typing skills can use it for regular study or targeted work on recurring errors. The project describes support for Windows and Linux distributions, while the current 5.2.1 release requires Linux with snapd on x86_64 (amd64) hardware.

Open-Typer is open-source software, and its combination of automatic checking, focused error-word exercises, reverse text, timing controls, language choices, and visual customization distinguishes it from a tutor limited to fixed lessons. Its free-to-use touch-typing approach is intended to make practice available to anyone learning or improving keyboard skills.
