About

OverKeys places a customizable on-screen keyboard over Windows so you can see the active layout while typing. It supports practice with alternative layouts such as Colemak, Dvorak, Graphite, Focal, Canary, QWERTY, and user-defined arrangements, helping users build familiarity and improve typing system-wide.

Appearance controls cover colors, fonts, sizes, offsets, and key styles, while auto-hide removes the overlay when it is not in use. The visualizer supports staggered, matrix, and split-matrix keymaps, including five- and six-column variants, plus an optional top row for numbers or configured keys. A second layout can appear beside the default one for reference during a transition.

Custom layouts are loaded from configuration files and can define top labels, held-state keys, locale-specific keys, and ignored keys such as Print Screen or layer triggers. Layer switching works with QMK, ZMK, and other programmable firmware through configurable triggers and toggle modes. Kanata users can connect over TCP to display the active layer, while Learning Mode color-codes keys by finger position and Reactive Shift Mapping changes symbols when Shift is held.

Developed and published by Angelo Convento, this open-source Windows system utility targets x64 systems. It began as a way for its creator to practice the Canary layout system-wide and grew to include custom layouts, layer integration, and appearance controls. Current version 0.3.5, released July 12, 2026, adds a hotkey for toggling top-row visibility, a native debug viewer in the Advanced tab, wide-mod adjustments, improved foreign-layout mapping, and more detailed timestamped logging.
