PhoneTrack

PhoneTrack is an open-source Android application for continuously recording location coordinates. It is intended for Android users who need to log device positions in the background and send those records to a compatible destination. Positions can be saved at a chosen frequency and uploaded in real time when connectivity is available, or later when a network connection returns.

The app supports multiple logging destinations, with separate settings for frequency, minimum distance, minimum accuracy, and significant movement. A log job can send data to the PhoneTrack Nextcloud app, while a custom log job can use HTTP GET or POST requests accepted by another server. When network access is unavailable, PhoneTrack stores positions for later handling. It can start logging when the Android system boots, allowing logging jobs to begin without a manual launch.

PhoneTrack also supports remote control by SMS commands. Available commands include requesting the current position, activating an alarm, starting or stopping all logging jobs, and creating a logging job. For a Nextcloud PhoneTrack session, the app can display devices on a map.

The application belongs in the Navigation & Travel category because its main task is collecting and transmitting location data for map-based tracking. Its dark theme and multilingual user interface provide additional interface options without changing that core role. To use the Nextcloud destination, a Nextcloud instance with the PhoneTrack app enabled is required; other server destinations do not require that setup, while the app requires Android 4.3 or later.
