Processing lets you write and run small programs that turn code into visual sketches, animations, and interactive experiments in a sketchbook-style workspace. It combines a programming language with the Processing Development Environment, giving learners a direct way to edit code and see the result. Even the logo is made from code, so changing a few values provides an immediate introduction to cause and effect in programming.

The environment includes many examples that can be opened, modified, and run as starting points for new work, supported by a language reference, beginner tutorials, and further documentation. Artists, designers, researchers, and learners use it to bring visual ideas to life while building software literacy through practice. Community-contributed libraries and tools extend the core software, while the forum provides a place to share projects and learn from other programmers.

Projects created in Processing can be used on macOS, Windows, Android, Raspberry Pi, and many additional Linux platforms, while the current x86_64 (amd64) build runs on Linux with snapd. Initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas, the project has been supported by programmers and the nonprofit Processing Foundation, a 501(c)(3); its copyright history also credits the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 2001–2004, Fry and Reas for 2004–2012, and the Foundation for 2012–2021.

Processing is open-source software in the education category, and version 4.5.6 is the current release. Its sketch-based workflow suits classroom demonstrations, creative coding, visual prototypes, and experiments where immediate feedback makes programming concepts easier to explore.
