About
Sane Break reminds you to leave the screen at suitable points in your workflow, helping prevent breaks from being mindlessly skipped without interrupting work unnecessarily. Its gentle prompts are intended for meaningful pauses rather than constant, disruptive alerts. Users can postpone a break, pause or resume reminders, trigger a break immediately, and use meeting or focus modes when their schedule demands uninterrupted attention. Program monitoring, idle-activity handling, and controls for postponing or ending meetings help the reminder respond to what is happening on the computer, while command-line controls support scripts and status checks.
It suits people who spend long periods at a computer, including office workers, developers, and anyone who wants structured pauses during focused work. AllanChain publishes Sane Break 0.10.4 for Windows in the System Tools category as open-source software, with a cross-platform design that also covers macOS and Linux.
The Windows build requires an x86 installation of Windows 10 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later; older Windows releases may also work, and the program is available in portable ZIP and installer EXE forms. macOS 13 or newer is supported through Homebrew or separate DMG builds for Intel Macs and Apple silicon. Debian-based Linux support is limited to Debian Bookworm and Trixie because many derivatives ship outdated Qt versions or lack the latest layer-shell-qt; Ubuntu LTS has the same relevant Qt and layer-shell-qt limitations, and the AppImage is experimental and may not work on every machine.
This release fixes a macOS crash caused by an unplugged display and corrects multi-display window placement on GNOME, while also improving how post-break activity inhibitors are handled.
Requires Windows 10+ · Server 2016+ · Architecture: x86
What's new in v0.10.6
What's new Features - pause on screen lock (#174) Other improvements - fix AppImage release and make it updatable (f388ef9) - upgrade to Qt 6.12 for Windows and macOS builds (10a861f) - mark GNOME 51 as supported (266cdb3) Installation instructions: macOS Recommended installation method: brew install allanchain/tap/sane-break Alternatively, download sane-break-macos-x86_64.dmg if you are using an Intel Mac, or sane-break-macos-arm64.dmg if you are using Apple silicon. Open and install it. macOS 13 or newer are supported. Windows x86 version of Windows 10 or newer is supported. Older versions may be supported too. - Portable version: Download the sane-break-windows.zip extract it. Put the .exe executable anywhere you like. - Installer verions: Download the sane-break-windows.exe and run it. Linux For Debian-based distributions, there is a notoriously large number of derivatives, and many of them ship old versions of Qt and do not include the latest layer-shell-qt. It is impractical to create .deb packages for all of them, so we only provide support for Debian Bookworm and Trixie. (Unfortunately, Ubuntu LTS ships with a very old version of Qt and lacks layer-shell-qt.) The difference between Bookworm build and Trixie build is the layer shell support. If you are using a Debian-based distro and a Wayland compositor with layer shell protocol support (e.g. KDE Neon), you probably need the Debian Trixie build. Otherwise, the Bookworm build is good to go. For GNOME users, make sure to enable the GNOME shell extension with: gnome-extensions enable [email protected] AppImage version is experimental. It may or may not work on your machine.
