screen-translate

screen-translate is a free Linux desktop application for extracting and translating text from selected areas of the screen. It is intended for Linux users who need to read on-screen content in another language, including use in educational settings. The application uses optical character recognition to capture text and provides a translation of it in real time.

Users can select a rectangular screen region through a semi-transparent overlay with visual feedback. The selected text can be translated through the DeepL API, which supports more than 30 languages and requires a free or paid API key, or through the MyMemory API, which does not require an API key. DeepL API keys can be stored locally within the application.

The interface includes language selection, a resizable results window, a maximize control, and a layout that adapts to the available space. It uses clear result styling, appropriate Linux system fonts, spacing, and line breaks to organize extracted and translated text. screen-translate also supports multiple monitors and provides helpful error messages when OCR or translation requests fail.

Translation through either service requires an internet connection. As a Linux application in the Education category, screen-translate is distributed through MirrorNest as a link to the official release rather than as a mirrored copy.
