About
Use subterfuge to split a secret into mnemonic shares that can later be combined according to a chosen threshold. This gives organizations a way to distribute control of sensitive material among several people instead of placing a private key or other secret with one individual. The shares use groups of memorable words, making the backup material practical to record and distribute.
The application implements SLIP39, the Satoshi Lab Improvement Proposal that formalizes Shamir’s Secret Sharing for mnemonic codes used to back up secret keys. Shamir’s scheme is designed for groups whose members may have conflicting interests but must cooperate by mutual consent, a situation relevant to companies, nonprofit organizations, and other collective custodians. Adi Shamir published the underlying secret-sharing method in November 1979, and renewed interest in it followed the growth of cryptocurrencies.
subterfuge is an open-source Linux application in the Education category, created by Jules Azad Emery. It is intended for people learning threshold secret-sharing concepts as well as groups designing shared custody arrangements for private keys. The software is implemented in Flutter, Google’s open-source framework for producing natively compiled applications from one codebase across Linux, Web, Android, Windows, macOS, and iOS.
Version 1.0.0 runs on Linux with snapd and targets x86_64 (amd64) systems. Its focus on SLIP39 mnemonic shares distinguishes it from a generic secret-storage utility by centering the human and organizational process of jointly protecting a secret. Users should understand that the program is an educational, practical implementation of a scheme for shared control rather than an individual-key backup workflow.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
