Thonny lets learners write, run, and inspect Python programs in a focused environment designed for their first programming experiences. Developed by Aivar Annamaa, this open-source IDE keeps its initial interface deliberately uncluttered so beginners can concentrate on code rather than advanced controls. It also supports experienced learners who want to use an existing Python installation instead of the bundled interpreter.

The editor highlights common syntax mistakes such as missing quotation marks or parentheses, while highlighting variable occurrences helps distinguish local variables from globals and expose naming errors. A Variables view shows how program execution and shell commands change Python values. Its debugger runs code step by step without requiring breakpoints, follows program structure with larger or smaller steps, and can show expression evaluation as Python replaces subexpressions with their results. Stepping into a function opens a separate view with its local-variable table and code position, making calls and recursion easier to understand.

Thonny 5.0.0 targets 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 on Intel or AMD computers, and its bundled Python 3.14 is also available in a portable Windows variant usable on Arm. Windows 7, Windows 8, and 32-bit Windows 10 no longer have published installers; those systems can use an older Python version together with Thonny separately.

This release is primarily an intermediate bug-fix update adding compatibility with newer Python versions, while dependency upgrades account for the major-version change and planned new features move to version 6. Thonny 5 is also dedicated to Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion.
