The project is developed by Wildfire Games, an international collective of volunteer game developers, and is distributed as freeware with open-source code. Release 28, titled “Boiorix,” introduces the Germans as a new faction, representing a nomadic coalition of the Cimbri, Teutones, Ambrones, and other Celto-German tribes. Their historical background draws on the Cimbri’s origins in northern modern-day Denmark, their migration toward Italy and France, and their decade-long war with the Roman Republic, with armies, seeresses, livestock, shelters, and goods traveling in wagon trains.

Version 0.28.0 is the first release without the Alpha label, reflecting a more mature development process and more frequent releases. Before updating, players should disable every installed mod to reduce the risk of conflicts, while mod creators should port their work to the new release. The project also welcomes testers, translators, developers, and artists who want to contribute to its continued development. On MacOS, this release targets Apple Silicon systems using the arm64 architecture.
