7-Zip26.00

7-Zip combines files into archives and compresses them, helping reduce the space required for stored or transferred data while targeting a high compression ratio. On Linux, it can be used from the terminal to create, inspect, extract, and manage archived data through its command-line interface. Its native 7z format uses LZMA and LZMA2 compression, and its ZIP and GZIP results are described as 2–10% smaller than those produced by PKZip and WinZip.

It can pack and unpack 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and WIM archives, while extraction also covers APFS, AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VHDX, VMDK, XAR, and Z. AES-256 encryption is available for 7z and ZIP files, and 7z archives can be made self-extracting.

The utility suits Linux users, administrators, and organizations handling backups, software packages, disk images, or batches of files; its command-line form also fits scripted jobs. The official feature set includes Windows Shell integration, a FAR Manager plugin, and translations into 87 languages, alongside support for Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012, 2008, 2003, and 2000.

Version 26.00 is published by Igor Pavlov for Linux as open-source software. Most code uses the GNU LGPL, some portions use the BSD 3-Clause License, and certain unRAR components carry additional unRAR restrictions; use is permitted on commercial computers without registration or payment.
