About
Ubuntu users can sign in to cloud identity services through OpenID Connect with authd-oidc, bringing centralized authentication to workstations and servers. Released by Canonical as open-source Linux software, the current version is 0.5.2. It connects Ubuntu to any OpenID Connect-compliant identity provider, helping organizations and individuals move from local accounts toward cloud-based identity management.
Authentication uses the OAuth Device Authorization Grant defined by RFC 8628, providing a consistent login flow across Ubuntu Desktop and Server. The service supports graphical logins through GDM, remote access over SSH, and network services including NFS and Samba. This makes it useful for administrators managing mixed desktop, server, and network-service environments through an existing organizational identity provider.
authd-oidc requires Linux with snapd and runs on x86_64 (amd64) systems. It is available to Ubuntu Desktop and Server 24.04 LTS users, while Ubuntu Pro customers receive the same expanded security and support guarantees. Documentation covers its use and configuration, and the GitHub project accepts contributions and feedback from the community.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
