Banana Split turns a sensitive secret, such as a seed phrase, private key, or password, into multiple QR-code shards that can be stored separately. It uses Shamir’s Secret Sharing so that a chosen quorum of shards restores the secret, while fewer shards reveal nothing. To create a set, enter the secret, select the total number of shards and the number required for recovery, then accept an automatically generated passphrase or supply your own. The app encrypts the secret with that passphrase before dividing the encrypted data into QR codes.

You can print the shards or save them as PNG or PDF files, with full Unicode font support, and write the passphrase by hand on every sheet. Recovery involves scanning the required shards with the camera or from the gallery, including through multi-file import, and entering the passphrase. Banana Split supports English, Russian, Turkish, Belarusian, Georgian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Spanish. Its cryptography uses scrypt for key derivation, NaCl secretbox with XSalsa20-Poly1305 encryption, and Shamir sharing over GF(256).

All cryptographic processing takes place on the device, with no server communication, data collection, analytics, or trackers. The Android system tool runs on Android 7.0+ with arm64-v8a architecture and is currently version 0.10.2. Banana Split is open-source and a fork of Parity Technologies’ banana_split project. Its companion web app works with fully compatible shards and can be used without installation.
