BookStash

BookStash is an open-source Android app in the Reading & Writing category. It provides a private, local-first reader and library for web fiction and books. It is intended for readers who want to choose, organize, and retain their own collection rather than use a general content feed. The device acts as the database, so downloaded works and library information are kept locally. Users add works to their library, download them to the device, and read them offline.

The library organizes downloaded works into fanfic, web serials, and books. Works can be grouped by fandom or series, with search and include-or-exclude tag filtering available. The reader offers a clean reading view with adjustable fonts and remembers the reader’s place. It also supports moving between chapters and works within a series.

Discover lets users track tags from supported sources and find new matching works during synchronization. Results can be filtered by completion status, with excluded tags set separately for each shelf. The What’s New view shows newly fetched and saved works, while series following can retrieve every work in a series. BookStash reads publicly available works from sources such as Archive of Our Own, Royal Road, and Scribble Hub, along with book metadata from public catalogues.

BookStash keeps reading data on the user’s device and does not use accounts, subscriptions, or a central server holding the library. The library can be backed up, exported, and moved by the user. Its GPLv3 license reflects its open-source distribution and lack of paywalled features, ads, and tracking. MirrorNest mirrors the official Android build directly on its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing. BookStash is in early development, so some features may still have rough edges while they stabilise.
