About
CrankBoy Manager transfers Game Boy ROMs from a Linux computer to a Playdate running CrankBoy. You can drag files into the application, send several ROMs in one batch, and work with .gb, .gbc, and .gbz formats, including ROMs packed in ZIP archives. It also downloads cover art automatically and accepts associated .pdi, .png, and .jpg files for the transfer.
To connect the handheld, unlock the Playdate and press its Menu button to begin; the device reboots into Data Disk Mode, after which you press Menu again, choose Playdate, and select it in the computer’s file browser. The device may take a few seconds to appear, and the browser-based connection uses the Web Serial API, so browser support for that interface matters. This workflow suits Playdate owners who use CrankBoy and want to maintain a local ROM collection without copying each file individually.
CrankBoy Manager is open-source System Tools software for Linux, and current version 1.2.0 fixes the ROM drop-target text shown in dark mode. CrankBoy is an independent, community-led project and is not affiliated with, authorized by, sponsored by, or endorsed by Nintendo; the emulator is intended for playing legally acquired ROMs. Game Boy is a Nintendo trademark, while Playdate is a Panic trademark.
Requires Linux + Flatpak · Architecture: x86_64, aarch64
