Cwtch (Unofficial)

Cwtch (Unofficial) is an open-source Linux package for privacy-preserving, decentralized, multi-party messaging. Its underlying protocol is designed for applications that resist exposing metadata, with communication taking place through Tor v3 onion services. Cwtch is not based on a single central service or network.

Participants can host their own safe spaces or provide infrastructure for others seeking one. The protocol allows anyone to build and connect bots, services, and user interfaces, while communication is end-to-end encrypted. Information, including messages and protocol metadata, is not exchanged or made available without the participants’ explicit consent.

This release is an unofficial Snap intended for Linux users seeking software in the Security & Privacy category. A known issue affects the experimental image-upload feature: enabling it prevents images from being uploaded.

MirrorNest stores the official build directly on its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing. The package is therefore distributed through MirrorNest as a mirrored Linux download rather than as an independently developed Cwtch service.
