KeePassXC lets users save passwords in an encrypted vault and fill them into favorite applications automatically, so credentials do not have to be handled separately. It can organize usernames, passwords, URLs, attachments, and notes in an offline encrypted file that the user may place in any location, including private or public cloud storage. Passwords stay encrypted at all times, while the application stores no data on remote servers and operates without cloud services, advertising, trackers, or subscriptions.

As a community-driven port of the Windows password manager KeePass Password Safe, KeePassXC brings that model to Linux users managing personal data securely. It is useful for keeping login details and other sensitive records together in one controlled file, rather than scattering them across unrelated files or applications. The project says the software runs on and is tested for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it relevant in mixed-device situations as well as on a Linux desktop.

The Linux build requires snapd and an x86_64 (amd64) system. It is open-source under the GPLv3 license, with source code available for inspection, sharing, and contribution. Current version 2.8.0 has received ANSSI's Security Visa after passing the agency's First-level Security Certification (CSPN), whose security-standard assessment is recognized in France and Germany.
