Daily Wallpaper retrieves a new photo from Unsplash each day and applies it as the GNOME desktop background, giving Linux users an automatically changing scene. Opening it for the first time triggers an immediate fetch and establishes the daily update, while its systemd user timer catches up after a missed run when the computer was powered off. The scheduled command is placed at ~/.local/bin/daily-wallpaper, and the configurable run time can be enabled or disabled.

Search terms and collections control the imagery when an Unsplash access key is entered in Settings; the key comes from Unsplash’s OAuth applications page and permits 50 requests per hour. Without a key, Lorem Picsum supplies Unsplash photos without search controls and at lower quality. Images are sized for the monitor resolution, older files are cleaned up automatically, and users can choose orientation, scaling, the number of retained images, and notifications.

The Current view shows the active wallpaper, photographer, a one-time search field, and a button for another image, while History displays downloaded pictures in a dated grid and restores any one with a click. Settings stores the key, search terms, collections, schedule, and other preferences in config.ini while preserving comments. Written-out time displays include the next run and elapsed time, while month and weekday names are fixed in German so they do not depend on LANG.

It runs on x86_64 (amd64) with snapd, uses Python 3 and GTK4/libadwaita, and is available through the desktop application menu with custom SVG icons for the app, window, and notifications.
