DevilutionX lets Mac users play Diablo and the Hellfire expansion on a modern desktop through a rebuilt version of the original game engine. It addresses the difficulty of running these classic releases on current operating systems while retaining their original gameplay. As a Games release for MacOS, version 1.5.5 supports both Intel and Apple Silicon processors.

The port adds engine improvements, bug fixes, and optional quality-of-life features. Health and experience bars are disabled by default but can be enabled in the game settings, while widescreen display can be turned off when preferred. Its full source code and accompanying modding tools make it a useful foundation for creating or running modifications, with a manual explaining available features and known mods built on DevilutionX.

Using the program requires data from the original game. Players without an original CD can obtain Diablo through GOG.com or Battle.net, while the shareware portion can use spawn.mpq from the shareware release in place of DIABDAT.MPQ. Hellfire additionally requires hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, and hfvoice.mpq.

It is freeware released under the Sustainable Use License, which restricts source-code use to non-commercial purposes and prohibits charging for access to the code or derivative works. DevilutionX is not associated with or endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment.
