Doomsday Engine lets MacOS players run Doom, Heretic, and Hexen with enhanced graphics while preserving the core gameplay of these classic first-person shooters. It refreshes the original technology for modern expectations around visual presentation, usability, and multiplayer play. Its interface supports separate game profiles and add-on selection, helping players organize different configurations and extra content.

An in-game overlay exposes configuration controls and a console prompt without leaving the action. Rendering features include particle effects, dynamic lights, bloom, vignette effects, and geometry-based ambient occlusion. The engine can display object models in FBX or MD5 format, skyboxes, filtered upscaled textures, and stereoscopic rendering modes.

Three-dimensional sound effects and reverb are available through the FMOD plugin, while MP3 music add-ons and high-quality MIDI playback through FluidSynth are supported on Unix systems. For network sessions, it automatically discovers LAN servers, provides a master server for public games, and includes a tool for running servers in the background. A multiplayer server browser gives players a direct way to find available sessions.

The portable codebase uses Qt 5 and OpenGL, and the software suits players revisiting the original games, configuring enhanced presentation, or hosting multiplayer matches. The MacOS release supports Intel and Apple Silicon machines, is freeware, and is currently at version 2.3.1.
