GNOME Boxes

GNOME Boxes is an open-source utility for Linux that lets users create and work with operating systems in virtual machines. It can download an operating system and install it in a new virtual machine, reducing the setup steps needed to begin. Users can create virtual machines from operating system images with a couple of clicks.

Boxes can automatically install CentOS Stream, Debian, Fedora, Microsoft Windows, OpenSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Ubuntu. It lets users limit the memory and storage resources that virtual machines consume from the Linux system. Snapshots allow a virtual machine to be restored to an earlier state.

The utility supports redirecting USB devices from the physical machine into virtual machines. It provides 3D acceleration for some supported operating systems and can resize a virtual machine’s display to match the Boxes window. Clipboard sharing, file sharing by dragging items from the file manager into the Boxes window, and shared folders connect the host system with virtual machines.
