janus-gateway gives a Linux service the server-side capability to establish WebRTC media communication with browsers. It exchanges JSON messages with browser clients and connects those sessions to the application logic running on the server. The software is a general-purpose WebRTC server rather than a finished conferencing or calling application, so developers incorporate it into a larger service that supplies the user-facing behavior.

It relays RTP and RTCP traffic between browsers and the attached server-side application, along with the application messages needed by that communication. Pluggable modules let deployments add only the functions required for a particular use case. Its C implementation keeps the footprint small enough for a full WebRTC gateway in the cloud or a compact nettop or dedicated box handling a focused task.
