Kõnele lets you dictate text directly into fields in other apps, turning speech into editable content. It supplies a speech-optimized input method editor (IME), the on-screen keyboard interface used by text areas such as message boxes and search bars. When speaking is inconvenient, input can also be handled through swiping and buttons.

Apps such as intelligent assistants and navigation tools can invoke the standard Android speech recognition activity from a microphone button; Kõnele implements that activity and uses it as its own launcher. It can connect to any speech recognition service available on the device, while its default configuration is optimized for the separate, lightweight Kõnele service. That service uses a server running kaldi-gstreamer-server for recognition. The default server operates from Tallinn and provides Estonian speech recognition, while the service can be deployed on a private network and customized for other languages. Kõnele also includes a simpler version of the service called Kõnele (fast recognition).

It suits people who dictate messages, enter searches, or use voice input in assistant and navigation apps, with touch controls available when speech is impractical. This open-source System Tools software runs on Android 7.0 or later and has Universal architecture. Version 1.9.16 improves compatibility with Android 13 and 14 and updates its dependencies.
