MakeMKV

MakeMKV converts video you own from DVD and Blu-ray discs into MKV files through a one-click workflow.

The resulting files retain the available video and audio tracks, including HD audio, along with chapters and metadata such as track language and audio type. MKV supports multiple tracks, and its files can be played by many media players across nearly all platforms or converted onward to formats including DVD and Blu-ray.

MakeMKV can also stream decrypted DVD or Blu-ray video directly to a broad selection of players, without creating an intermediate converted file, so disc content can be watched on a preferred operating system or device. Conversion speed is limited mainly by how quickly the optical drive can read the source, and the conversion or decryption process requires no additional software.

It is suited to owners of disc collections who want portable backups, flexible playback, or access to disc content through other media tools. Published by Lucy Llewellyn, MakeMKV is commercial video software, currently at version 1.18.3; it runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, with the Linux edition requiring snapd and supporting amd64, arm64, and armhf systems. DVD-opening functionality remains free, and all features—including Blu-ray decryption and processing—are free during beta.
