OpenBubbles lets Linux users exchange iMessages through a client that connects directly to Apple, bringing those conversations into an ecosystem also intended for Android, Windows, and the web. It provides access to Apple services including iMessage and FaceTime, supports iPhone group chats, and can work with an Android phone number.

Users can send formatted messages, react to them, reply in context, edit or unsend them, and play GamePigeon with contacts. FaceTime calls can be received or placed on any device, including joining existing calls without an invitation link, while GIF searching uses Tenor instead of GIPHY.

It suits people who need Apple-centered chats and calls across different phones and computers, such as Android users participating in iPhone group conversations or families sharing moments across devices. Activation requires one-time access to a Mac or an always-online iPhone, and OpenBubbles states that messages cannot be read by either OpenBubbles or Apple.

The current open-source release, 1.15.0.0, remembers each chat’s reply state, accepts custom headers during setup and in the background service’s server WebSocket connection, and disables editing for messages older than 15 minutes. It also fixes missed synchronization after background reconnection, link sending with servers on macOS Sonoma or later, FindMy device loading, the missing Profile section in iOS settings, and 24-hour time formatting in the scheduled-messages view.
