openHAB lets you automate a home by coordinating lights, appliances, sensors, and other connected equipment from one server. Its vendor- and technology-neutral approach gives homeowners a platform-independent foundation instead of tying automation to one manufacturer. A pluggable architecture connects more than 400 technologies and systems, covering thousands of devices and over 3,000 supported “things.”

Its rule engine supports time- and event-based triggers, scripts, actions, notifications, and voice control for tailored automation. A web interface provides graphical access to the installation, using port 8080 for HTTP and 8443 for HTTPS by default; users can change these ports and inspect or adjust them with the openhab.help command. Companion access includes web, iOS, Android, and other apps, while integrations connect services such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit.

The server can run on Linux, macOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, Docker, or Synology, and openHABian provides a preconfigured image for Raspberry Pi and other devices that can be written to an SD card. This Linux release is version 5.2.3, requires snapd, and targets x86_64 (amd64) hardware. It works on local hardware without a cloud service, keeps data at home, and communicates directly with local devices whenever possible.

The openHAB Cloud connector can use the free myopenhab.org service, or users can host their own cloud service. Built with Java on Apache Karaf and its OSGi runtime, openHAB is open-source software supported by the openHAB Foundation e.V., a registered nonprofit that maintains its vendor-neutral character. Community members contribute examples and tutorials and provide assistance for home automation projects.
