Rufid

Rufid is an open-source Android system tool that turns a phone into a USB boot-media utility. It writes local ISO and IMG files to attached USB mass-storage devices and can also stream an image from a direct URL. The tool is designed for external USB storage rather than the phone’s internal Android storage.

Its phone-first workflow lets users select a USB device, inspect it, choose an ISO, IMG, URL, or FreeDOS source, review the operation plan, write the media, and verify the result. Rufid can inspect boot records, run read benchmarks, back up a USB device to an Android document, and extract ZIP files. It can also recover used boot media into a normal FAT32 or exFAT drive, using a metadata quick-wipe as part of that recovery process. Direct URL mode provides quick access to official source pages for Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Linux Mint, Arch Linux, and openSUSE, but it does not bundle those operating system images.

For Windows installer ISOs, Rufid can create a FAT32 UEFI layout and split install.wim when it exceeds the FAT32 file-size limit. It can instead create an NTFS data volume with an MBR or GPT UEFI:NTFS helper layout. These Windows paths have been booted to the Windows Setup language screen in QEMU/OVMF, while physical USB controllers and PC firmware remain separate compatibility considerations. Destructive write and recovery operations use an explicit plan and confirmation screen that shows the selected device, its size, and available hardware identifiers.

Rufid has no ad SDK, analytics SDK, billing SDK, Firebase dependency, cloud account system, or remote crash-reporting SDK, and error reports remain local on the device. Its F-Droid build packages the boot payload set from auditable inputs, including source-built FreeDOS components and pinned upstream sources for UEFI:NTFS, wimlib, NTFS-3G tools, and 7-Zip-JBinding.
