About
Scans to PDF converts scanned pages into compact PDF files that can be searched for words. It divides each page into a bitonal foreground image for text and a separate color background image, then compresses those components independently. An invisible OCR text layer is embedded in the result, allowing searches while preserving the page’s visual appearance.
The included graphical interface supports interactive use, while the command-line interface fits scripted or batch workflows. Color and grayscale scans require preparation for good results, with Scan Tailor and GIMP recommended for that work. It is suited to people digitizing printed documents who want smaller, searchable files rather than image-only PDFs. Its dependencies are ImageMagick, QPDF, jbig2enc, and Tesseract.
Developed by Unrud, Scans to PDF is open-source Linux software in the Photo & Graphics category. Version 0.5.14 adds Croatian and Indonesian interface translations and updates the Czech translation.
