About

Synfig Studio is an open-source 2D animation application for Linux. It is designed for creating animations from both vector and bitmap artwork. Its workflow reduces the need to draw every frame manually by generating transitions between defined points, which can support animation production with fewer frame-by-frame drawing steps.

The program provides automatic tweening that operates independently of the animation’s frame rate. It supports many layer types, including geometric primitives, shapes, gradients, and fractals, allowing artwork and visual elements to be arranged in layered compositions. A bone system is included for controlling connected parts of artwork, and the tools are designed to work with pen tablets.

Synfig Studio includes filters and compositing effects for blurs, distortions, color adjustments, and masks. Color operations use High Dynamic-Range Imaging, while mathematical functions can be used to automate animation behavior. The software also supports sound, along with linking data at the file or parameter level for connected project elements.

In the MirrorNest catalog, Synfig Studio belongs to the Graphics & Design category and is listed for Linux. MirrorNest mirrors the official build directly onto its own storage and scans it for malware before publishing. Its open-source license makes the software suitable for users seeking an editable 2D animation tool distributed through a source-based software catalog.
