Traditional T9

Traditional T9 is an open-source Android keyboard based on the classic Nokia-style 12-key layout. It is intended for people who prefer predictive text entry over a conventional touchscreen keyboard, as well as users of Android devices with physical keypads or TV remote controls. The design focuses on typing rather than adding unrelated functions.

The keyboard provides predictive text input in more than 40 languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese using Pinyin, Hindi using phonetic input, Japanese using Romaji, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. It also supports configurable hotkeys, a clipboard, undo and redo actions, and extensive customization. Traditional T9 does not aim to reproduce QWERTY keyboards, swipe typing, GIFs, or stickers. Although it draws on the feel of older mobile phones, it is its own keyboard rather than an exact copy of TouchPal, Sony Ericsson, KaiOS, Samsung, or another device or application.

Privacy is a central part of the software’s stated design, with no spying, tracking, telemetry, reports, ads, or data collection. The Full version works entirely offline, while the Lite version connects to GitHub only to download dictionaries; Voice Input may require Internet access depending on the voice services available. Its open-source license allows the underlying software and these principles to be examined, and the project has been developed with help from the wider community.

In MirrorNest’s Android System Tools category, Traditional T9 is provided as a direct mirror of the official build stored on MirrorNest’s own infrastructure. MirrorNest scans the mirrored file for malware before publishing it, giving users a distribution path separate from the original source while retaining the official build. The Google Play version is nearly identical to the Lite version but includes additional closed-source premium features, and those components are stated not to compromise the project’s privacy principles.
