VeraCrypt encrypts entire systems and individual partitions on Linux, protecting the data stored in those areas from unauthorized access. It is intended for people who manage sensitive information on encrypted storage and want stronger safeguards against attacks that attempt to guess encryption keys.

The software strengthens its encryption algorithms to make brute-force attacks more difficult as attack techniques evolve. This extra protection can make opening an encrypted partition take longer, but it is described as having no effect on performance while applications are being used normally. VeraCrypt can also mount existing TrueCrypt volumes, giving users access to older encrypted storage without converting it first.

For storage that should use VeraCrypt’s format, existing TrueCrypt volumes can be converted accordingly. It also addresses vulnerabilities and other security problems associated with TrueCrypt, and its codebase is based on TrueCrypt 7.1a. VeraCrypt is open-source, is developed and published by Mounir IDRASSI, and is brought to users by IDRIX.

The current version is 1.26.30. Released files are PGP-signed with key ID 0x680D16DE, allowing their association with that signing key.
