vmbackup creates VictoriaMetrics data backups from instant snapshots, protecting data held by an existing VictoriaMetrics installation. It writes the backups to a chosen destination and can use data produced by earlier backup operations.

If the destination path already contains a previous backup, vmbackup automatically creates an incremental backup. A full backup can also reuse an existing backup on the same remote storage, with shared data copied on the server side to reduce transfer and operation time. The process can be interrupted at any point, and running vmbackup again with the same arguments resumes from where it stopped instead of starting over.

The tool suits administrators responsible for VictoriaMetrics data protection, including recurring backup jobs and interrupted transfers. The companion vmrestore utility restores data from backups, while vmbackupmanager provides a simpler way to create hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly backups.
