About
wscreensavers adds animated screensavers, live wallpaper, and screen-lock visuals to a Wayland desktop, giving an idle machine something to display beyond a static background. It combines classic XScreenSaver modules with custom 3D WebGL scenes, covering both familiar effects and rendered interactive-looking environments.
The suite uses gtk-layer-shell BACKGROUND and OVERLAY surfaces to place wallpaper and screensaver layers within the compositor. Idle detection can trigger the display behavior when the workstation is inactive, while multi-monitor support allows it to operate across multiple screens. An IPC command-line interface, invoked as wscreensavers ctl, lets other programs and scripts control the running service. A Noctalia Shell plugin provides an additional integration point for desktops using that shell.
It targets Wayland environments built on wlroots along with Hyprland, Sway, KDE, and GNOME, making it suitable for users who want animated desktop presentation, idle-period visuals, or a coordinated lock-screen experience on a multi-display setup. Christopher Patrick Fair publishes it as open-source software for Linux.
Version 1.1.16 runs on x86_64 (amd64) systems and requires Linux with snapd.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
