Its concordance functions support close reading of repeated patterns, while its text-analysis tools help examine vocabulary and other recurring features. Search syntax includes wildcard handling, so a question mark can represent any single character, and corpus-building options let users define which characters count as part of a token. Results give teachers, students, and language researchers a practical way to investigate authentic texts, compare usage, and support classroom or academic work.

AntConc 4.3.1 is freeware Education software for macOS on Apple Silicon (arm64), and it is intended to work with the latest version of Apple’s operating system. It runs on desktop computers, including Macs, rather than mobile devices such as iPhones, Android phones, iPads, or Chromebooks. Corpus files are interpreted as UTF-8 by default, so text saved in another encoding can produce a UnicodeDecodeError instead of being read correctly.

When searching for a literal question mark or another wildcard character, users must escape it in the query and include the character in the token definition used to create the corpus. AntConc’s focused desktop workflow and direct concordance views distinguish it from general-purpose reading software by keeping corpus search and textual evidence at the center.
