AU Lab2.3

AU Lab lets you mix digital audio and audition processing through a compact software mixer. It hosts Audio Unit effects, allowing users to place compatible plug-ins in an audio-monitoring chain and hear their results. The application is especially useful for mastering checks, effect evaluation, and careful comparisons of different processing choices.

A distinctive workflow is its support for AURoundTripAAC, an Audio Unit plug-in from Apple’s Digital Mastering tools. With the plug-in loaded, engineers can audition how music will sound after AAC encoding and make informed creative decisions about the master. AU Lab also helps users detect peaks and clipping and perform double-blind listening tests for less biased comparisons. These capabilities suit mastering engineers, producers, and other audio professionals evaluating music for Apple’s ecosystem.

It is also useful when Logic or another Audio Unit host is not already available on the computer. AU Lab is Apple’s freeware Music & Audio application for macOS, and version 2.3 runs on Intel and Apple Silicon architectures. Its focused design centers on mixing, monitoring, Audio Unit effects, and auditioning encoded audio instead of presenting the broader production features of a full digital audio workstation.
