Avogadro lets you build, edit, inspect, and render molecular structures in three dimensions, turning chemical ideas into models or calculation-ready input. It handles ordinary molecules as well as crystals, biomolecules, and surfaces, giving students and researchers a single workspace for visual exploration and structure preparation. Built-in force fields can quickly regularize hand-drawn geometry before further analysis.

Its modern 3D renderer supports reflections, ambient occlusion, varied display styles, and animated views for explaining molecular motion or producing presentation graphics. A rewritten core and multithreaded rendering engine are designed to handle systems containing thousands of atoms, while broad format support reads geometry files from many sources and writes to hundreds of formats. Native parsers expose results from GAMESS, Gaussian, Molden, MOPAC, NWChem, and ORCA calculations.

The software is used in computational chemistry, molecular modeling, chemistry teaching, bioinformatics, and materials science, from first 3D experiments to publication figures. Plugins can add interactive tools, commands, external-program interfaces, force fields, and file formats; developers can extend it with Python plugins or C++ code.

Version 2.0.0 supports macOS on Apple Silicon arm64, with a Qt foundation that fits the desktop environment; Avogadro is also supported on Windows and Linux, while Windows on ARM is a future target. It is freeware and open source under the permissive BSD 3-clause license, with translations for Simplified Chinese, English, Esperanto, French, Georgian, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, and Turkish.
