About
Banshee organizes local music by artist and album, lets you build playlists, and plays it through a familiar GTK interface with album artwork and desktop playback controls. It also handles podcast subscriptions, episode downloads, offline listening, and playback management from the same library. Last.fm integration can record listening, show recommendations, and help you discover related artists, albums, and tracks.
The player searches the Internet Archive for audio and streams results such as LibriVox audiobooks, while MPRIS-compatible tools and desktop media controls let you control playback outside the main window. On first launch, it proposes the desktop music folder, lets you select another location or postpone the choice, and imports files only after confirmation; files remain in their original locations by default.
Published by Alan Pope, this open-source Linux software is an unofficial community preservation build of Banshee 2.6.2, rather than an official release from the original developers, and some historical features and services are unavailable. It adds compatibility with newer Mono and libraries, fixes a GTK file-chooser crash, restores toolbar icons, integrates the Yaru theme, and supplies current certificate trust for HTTPS connections. Podcast downloading, resuming, retries, streaming, and error reporting were repaired, while Internet Archive search and metadata handling were updated for its current API.
Last.fm browser login, recommendations, now-playing updates, scrobbling, and safer retry behavior return alongside updated D-Bus, MPRIS, tray, notification, and GNOME artwork integration. Artwork retrieval now recovers missing covers, and shared snap storage keeps artwork caches and downloaded podcasts from being duplicated during updates.
Requires Linux + snapd · Architecture: x86_64 (amd64)
