Play an enhanced, rewritten version of Yu Suzuki’s arcade racer OutRun on Linux with Cannonball, rather than running the original through emulation. Developed by Martin Wimpress in portable C++, it is a complete recreation of the game engine for Linux multimedia players.

Gameplay runs at 60 frames per second, adds a true widescreen view with 25 percent more play area, scales sprites at high resolution, and offers extra camera perspectives. Time Trial and Continuous modes accompany the Western, Japanese, and prototype track sets, while LayOut custom tracks can also be used. Players can customize the music, save high scores, and enjoy additional level objects alongside corrections for bugs in the original game.

Cannonball accepts analog and digital input from joypads, steering wheels, and pedals, and its keyboard bindings can be changed from the in-game menu. The default keyboard layout uses the cursor keys for steering, Z to accelerate, X to brake, Space to change gear, and F5 to open the menu. A separate joystick connection command is available on Linux for controller support.

The freeware v0.3-50-g7a4a3b9 release requires Linux with snapd and supports amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, and s390x systems. Its Snap package contains only the game engine, with the appropriate ROM files retrieved when the game runs for the first time.
