About

Cannonball is a Linux multimedia program that provides an enhanced version of Yu Suzuki’s arcade racing game OutRun. It is not an emulator, but a complete rewrite of the original game in portable C++. The program is intended for people who want to play this rewritten version on a Linux system.

Its features include 60 frames-per-second gameplay, true widescreen mode with a 25 percent larger play area, high-resolution sprite scaling, and additional camera views. It includes Time Trial and Continuous modes, support for Western, Japanese, and prototype tracks, and support for custom tracks from LayOut. Music can be customized, high scores can be saved, and the program includes more level objects and fixes for bugs found in the original game.

Cannonball supports analog and digital controllers, including joypads, steering wheels, and pedals, as well as keyboard controls that can be redefined in its menu. Default controls include cursor keys for steering, Z for acceleration, X for braking, Space for gear changes, and F5 for the menu. The Snap package contains the game engine only, and the appropriate ROM files are downloaded when the game runs for the first time.

MirrorNest links directly to the official release instead of mirroring the software. On Linux, it can be installed with the cannonball Snap, with a separate joystick connection command available for controller support. Cannonball is listed in the multimedia category, and its license is unknown.
