Play local music, HTTP(S) streams, and livestreams in Cog, with Apple HLS handled through FFmpeg. It can shuffle albums or individual tracks and repeat a track, album, or complete playlist, while displaying live metadata from Shoutcast, Icecast, Ogg Vorbis comments, and timed ID3v2 packets.

The player supports CUE sheets, including embedded sheets in several formats, and keeps cached artwork per unique image whether it is embedded or external; artwork may be JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, or AVIF. It opens MP3, including free-format files up to 640 kbps through minimp3, MPEG-4 and Matroska containers with chapters, TAK, APL, WavPack with DSD, IFF including DSDIFF, DFF, and WSD. Tracker music is supported through libopenmpt, while GBS, SPC, SNSF, VGM, VGZ, NCSF, and 2SF cover Game Boy, Super Nintendo, Sega and related systems, Nintendo DS, and streamed game music through vgmstream.

Cog also plays MIDI SoundFont, DLS, and embedded soundbanks through SpessaSynth, offers FM synthesis with Nuked OPL3, Sound Canvas emulation with Nuked SC55, and Audio Unit synthesizers including Apple’s DLSMusicDevice. A toolbar spectrum display, speed adjustment, and pitch shifting using Rubber Band or SignalSmith Stretch add listening and analysis controls, while HRTF binaural audio and head tracking work with AirPods and compatible headphones on macOS Monterey or later.

It suits Mac listeners, archivists, tracker and game-music enthusiasts, and anyone handling mixed music libraries or network audio. Cog runs on macOS 12 Monterey or newer on Intel and Apple Silicon, and is freeware and open source.
