fakecam2.2.0

fakecam changes a webcam’s live image before another program receives it, letting the person on camera alter how their surroundings appear during a stream or video call. It can blur the area behind them or replace that area with an image they choose. A separate Star Wars hologram-style effect gives the entire webcam view the appearance of a transmission from a distant galaxy.

The processed picture is exposed as a second webcam feed rather than being confined to fakecam’s own display. While the program is running, users can choose the Fakecam video input device in webcam-compatible software such as Zoom or Skype. This allows the altered video to work in applications that do not provide their own background effects. It is suited to streamers, remote participants, and anyone who wants to change a camera scene without altering the physical surroundings.

Developed by Lucy Llewellyn, fakecam 2.2.0 is open-source software in the Video & Media Players category. It runs on Linux, requires snapd, and supports the x86_64 (amd64) architecture. The additional camera device is provided through the v4l2loopback kernel module. On Debian and Ubuntu derivatives, that module comes from the v4l2loopback-dkms package, and fakecam requires the associated configuration, including automatic module loading.
