FineTune lets you set separate volume levels for individual Mac applications, mute them, and adjust their sound without changing every other audio stream. Its menu bar controls also route applications to different speakers or other output devices, provide multi-device output, and shape audio with a 10-band equalizer and headphone correction. This per-application approach suits listeners who need a quiet background player, a louder video, or distinct audio destinations instead of one system-wide setting.

Each app can receive 2x, 3x, or 4x volume gain, while pinned apps remain available for configuring volume, EQ, and routing before they start playing. Ignored apps are returned to normal macOS audio after FineTune removes its audio tap from them. Scrolling over a slider in the popup, heads-up display, or EQ panel changes its level, and custom shortcuts can control the currently audible app’s volume or mute state. A volume-down shortcut affects a YouTube tab playing behind Terminal rather than Terminal itself, while an inaudible session passes the command to the frontmost app; holding the volume keys repeats adjustments, and volume-up unmutes while setting the new level.

A separate shortcut opens or closes the popup from anywhere, including full-screen apps, and Coarse, Normal, Fine, or Extra-Fine step settings govern the F10–F12 keys, global shortcuts, and popup arrow navigation. Install it, launch it from Applications, grant Screen & System Audio Recording permission, and audio-playing apps appear in the menu bar automatically. FineTune 1.9.0 is freeware and open-source, categorized under Music & Audio for macOS 15 Sequoia or later on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and serves as an alternative to SoundSource. In edit mode, placing a device above the built-in speakers enables automatic switching when that device connects, with the preferred order saved permanently.
