About
fre:ac converts audio files between formats and rips music CDs into files for use with a hardware player, including files that another audio program cannot open. It supports MP3, MP4/AAC, M4A/AAC, FLAC, WMA, Opus, Ogg Vorbis, Speex, Monkey’s Audio (APE), WavPack, WAV, and other formats. Entire music libraries can be processed while preserving their folder and filename structure.
An integrated player and tag editor lets users check tracks and maintain their metadata in the same workspace. The CD ripper queries freedb/CDDB and GNUdb for artist and track information before ripping, writes those details to ID3v2 or other title tags, and supports database submissions. Its multi-threaded conversion engine can produce several formats at once, verify lossless input and output files, and use command-line codecs, while MP3, M4A/AAC, Opus, and Speex encoders use multiple processor cores.
Playlists, cue sheets, and chapters are supported, and an optional command-line interface complements the graphical one. Full Unicode handling covers tags and filenames in scripts such as Japanese, Cyrillic, Arabic, and Indic writing systems, while the interface is available in more than 40 languages.
