About
geteduroam configures a Linux device for eduroam by applying the wireless profile supplied by the user’s institution. It addresses the common problem of discovering and setting up eduroam only after arriving away from the home campus. Instead of requiring a separate eduroam account, it uses the user’s national federated identity through eduGAIN-connected services such as SURFconext, Swamid, FEIDE, or HAKA.
The service can generate eduroam login credentials as client certificates when they are needed. Its companion apps are designed to install and configure eduroam automatically on users’ devices, reducing the manual work traditionally involved in deploying the profile. Students and faculty members can use it before travel, during visits to other institutions, or whenever their institution’s eduroam connection has not yet been configured.
Eduroam Wi-Fi is deployed at nearly every campus in Europe, but correct installation on personal devices has not kept pace with that coverage. geteduroam is intended as an extension of NREN T&I services that uses the broader adoption of federated identity to improve that deployment. Use depends on access to an institution-provided eduroam profile and its participating federated identity service; the Linux release is version 0.16 and is open-source.
Requires Linux + Flatpak · Architecture: x86_64, aarch64
