kube-apiserver accepts Kubernetes API requests so operators can read and change the shared state of a cluster. It validates submitted configurations before applying them to Kubernetes objects such as pods, services, replication controllers, and other resources. Its REST interface handles operations that retrieve or modify those objects and their configuration.

As a central control-plane service, kube-apiserver gives Kubernetes components a common endpoint for communicating about cluster resources. It is intended for people who operate or develop Kubernetes environments, rather than as a standalone application for general end users. Canonical’s Kubernetes offering uses this component as part of infrastructure for managing containerized workloads.

That broader platform combines Kubernetes with built-in open-source components for networking, local storage, DNS, load balancing, metrics, gateways, and ingress. It supports node management in small clusters and automated large-scale operations through Juju, while scaling across laptops, cloud environments, and data centers. Canonical also describes the platform as securely designed, with up to 15 years of security maintenance and support, secure-by-default operation, and a built-in FIPS 140-3 mode.

The current 1.36.3 release runs on Linux with snapd and targets x86_64 (amd64) systems. Ubuntu Pro can provide automated security patching for the underlying Ubuntu nodes and Kubernetes software, along with enterprise support, hardening tools, and compliance profiles. kube-apiserver is open-source and is published by Canonical.
