MicroK8s lets you run a complete Kubernetes environment on a Linux workstation, server, or appliance with a compact deployment. Canonical’s distribution supplies the core Kubernetes components in a small, fast, secure, certified package that can grow from one node into a high-availability multi-node cluster. Its autonomous cluster operation gives developers and operators a consistent Kubernetes experience across development, CI/CD, cloud, edge, and production workloads.

It supports offline development, prototyping, testing, and continuous integration pipelines without requiring a full external cluster. Appliance builders can develop containerized IoT applications for Kubernetes and deploy them to MicroK8s on their devices, including commodity hardware used at the edge. The same environment is suited to production-grade, conformant Kubernetes deployments where high availability and limited infrastructure attention matter.

Services can be switched on or off as needed, including the dashboard, DNS, registry, and Istio, while the bundled kubectl interface manages workloads and resources. MicroK8s also provides self-healing high availability, transactional over-the-air updates, and sandboxed kubelet environments inside an isolated deployment package. It is designed to follow upstream Kubernetes features and can create nodes quickly for CI/CD workloads.

The current version is v1.36.2, and the software is open-source. It runs on Linux with snapd and targets x86_64 (amd64) systems; Canonical is the developer and publisher.
