MPD plays music through the server’s audio device, allowing a remote machine or client to direct playback from a central library. Running as a server-side daemon, it accepts commands through its network protocol instead of requiring playback to be managed locally. Plugins and supporting libraries give it support for sound files in various formats. The daemon also keeps information about all available music so that it can be searched and retrieved when needed.

A network-connected client can control the player, request music information, and manage playlists remotely. This setup suits listeners who keep their collection on one device while controlling playback from another, as well as systems that need an always-available music service. MPD’s separation of playback, library information, and remote control is its defining distinction from a conventional local player.

The Android version requires Android 7.0 or later and supports the arm64-v8a and armeabi-v7a architectures; playback uses the Android device’s audio hardware as the server endpoint. The current release is version 0.23.17. MPD is open-source software released under the GNU General Public License version 2.
