mpv-android

mpv-android plays video and music files on an Android phone or tablet, providing a portable player for personal media. It is a mobile port of the mpv player, bringing its playback engine to touch-screen devices. Users can open a media file and watch it or listen to it without moving their collection into a separate media library.

The player handles many common video and audio containers and codecs, and it can select among available subtitle and audio tracks. Playback controls let viewers pause, seek, change volume, adjust the display, and continue listening with the screen off when the device supports that behavior. Its mpv foundation also makes it suitable for people who prefer a playback-focused interface over a catalog-driven streaming service.

mpv-android fits commuters, travelers, and home users who keep media on an Android device and want one player for both films and music. It belongs to the Video & Media Players category and is distributed under an open-source license. The current release is 2026-09-17-release.

Installation requires Android 6.0 or newer, with builds for arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, and x86_64 hardware. Choosing the build that matches the device’s processor architecture is therefore part of preparing it for use. Its compact scope makes it most appropriate when the main task is direct playback rather than organizing a large online media subscription.
