Connect services, devices, and AI agents through a NATS messaging server, allowing separate application components to exchange data in distributed systems. It provides a shared connection layer for systems whose parts are dynamic, loosely coupled, and spread across cloud, on-premise, edge, or IoT environments. Applications can use publish/subscribe, request/reply, queueing, streaming, key-value storage, and object storage within the same real-time system.

NATS is designed around location-independent communication, many-to-many connections, and an asynchronous operating model, so components can communicate without being tied to a particular deployment location. More than 30 NATS client implementations let programs written in different supported languages participate in one distributed system. This suits service architectures that combine multiple programming languages, as well as edge deployments on low-resource devices, vehicle fleets, or systems placed close to users.

Canonical publishes this open-source server for Linux, and it requires snapd while targeting x86_64 (amd64) architecture. The same NATS server technology fits compact computing arrangements such as Raspberry Pi deployments and larger installations, making it relevant to developers, platform teams, and operators building distributed applications.
