nusic scans artists stored on a phone and alerts the listener when those artists have new releases. It uses MusicBrainz, a free music encyclopedia, to identify releases and can download their cover images from the Cover Art Archive. This is useful for listeners following many artists who want release notices without checking each artist separately.

On first start, nusic initializes and may take a while, but later checks are faster. It schedules regular searches through the device’s alarm manager and can detect an available internet connection before checking. The app is not yet optimized for tablets, making phones its practical setting.

Its network permissions cover MusicBrainz queries and cover downloads, while access to connection information lets it recognize internet availability. Startup permission supports scheduled checks, protected-storage access reads the artists on the device, and a battery-related permission keeps the phone awake while searches run. nusic 3.3.3 is open-source Android software with Universal architecture, and it does not require an account.
